Organic Dark Roast Coffee
While most supermarket coffees never make it past primary school, organic dark roast coffee has a graduate degree. In order to be identified as organic, it must go through a rigorous certification process, with oversight from a third-party agency. This certification assures that as the beans are grown, processed, shipped, stored and roasted, they have absolutely no contact with synthetic chemicals. Conventionally grown coffee uses the most pesticides and herbicides of any crop except for cotton. Don't panic--the health-related reasons for buying organic are not as crucial for coffee as they are for fruits and vegetables consumed directly. First, the fruit itself is stripped off, leaving only the seed. That seed is subjected to very high temperatures in the roasting process, and is never actually consumed. Instead, we soak the ground seeds in water, then drink the beverage and throw away the grounds. Not much is likely to be left of any chemicals used in the growing process. There are still good reasons to go organic, though. The fewer chemicals used in growing, the less residue will pollute the ground and water. Also, many organic growers are smaller, self-sustaining farms in areas where poverty is a major problem. So drinking organic coffee might give you a nice rush of self-righteousness along with your dose of flavor and caffeine. You can mix a little financial smugness in there, too.
