Dark Roast Coffee
Our beloved founder John Goerke is a coffee dork. He wasn't always obsessed--he even worked as an auto mechanic for a while. Always drank it, though, and when he decided to get out of a business where all of his customers were unhappy (hey, how chipper are you when bringing your car in for repairs?), he turned to coffee. In 1986, John and a partner founded the Caribbean Coffee Company in Santa Barbara, California. At first they were just distributors, but John loved dark roast coffee and a smooth, rich, non-bitter cup became his Holy Grail. When he couldn't find it anywhere, he decided to make it himself. In 1993, John went independent and began working on Hair Raiser. When he put it on the market two years later, it was declared the Best New Product for 1995 by the Specialty Coffee Association of America, which ought to tell you something. Hair Raiser isn't just one of a line of coffees. It's the only coffee, at least as far as John's concerned. You're not going to find chocolate amaretto Hair Raiser or hazelnut crème. (If you feel you must add flavors to it, go ahead. Just don't tell us.) Hair Raiser is the darkest roast you'll find. We can get away with it because we've figured out how to roast it extra dark without burning it. We'd tell you how we do it, but you know what would happen then. From the logo on the bag to the beans inside, everything about Hair Raiser is different. This coffee gleams, baby! Those oils, brought out by the dark roasting, are what give Hair Raiser its richness, smoothness and spirit.
